BBUSA Map Redesign

BankBlack USA is an independent, grassroots organization with the goal of connecting individuals with Black-owned banks and credit unions in their area. Their organization was formed from the larger #BankBlack movement following deadly police shootings in Black communities. In addition, there are very few Black-owned banks - specifically, there is not a single Black-owned bank with at least one billion in assets. As a result, many Black communities face banking deserts and must resort to banks that do not understand their needs.

  • BankBlack’s main platform is its website. One of the most important features of the website is the BankBlack map, which is an interactive map that displays the network of Black-owned banks and credit unions across America. The goal of the map is to connect users with Black owned banks and financial institutions, as well as educate the public on the Black owned banking deserts in the US.

  • The main concern is that the map displays a superfluous amount of information that is not clearly presented to its users. The UI is also out of date and does not match the rest of the website stylistically.

  • Based on user research and design work, my team creates a map that presents the information in a way that is easy to understand and empowering, so that more users are encouraged to bank Black. The redesign of this map also enhances visibility and educates stakeholders about where to find Black-owned banks. The increased visibility guides users to invest their money in Black-owned institutions, which will allow for the redistribution of wealth within the Black community. This map will be instrumental in bolstering financial and economic empowerment.

Search feature

Improved search provides users clarity so that they know exactly which parameters they can use to search on the BankBlack map

  • The sections (zip code, proximity, bank name) are based on the table fields users identified as highest priority.

Bank Information

Legend feature

This design restructured the order of the banks to be alphabetical, as well as provide information on what the legend is currently displaying. Users would also be able to customize the legend more for their needs using the hamburger menu in the upper right hand corner, such as resizing the legend.
